Star Trek Mourns End of Another Series
Forthcoming fifth season of “Lower Decks” will be its last
It used to be that, for Star Trek, seven was the magic number.
Now it seems to have shrunk to five.
Starting with Star Trek: The Next Generation, series in the franchise from the ’80s and ’90s were all considered successful — and sent off in each one’s grand style — after seven seasons on the air.
Only now, we’re just now bidding adieu to Star Trek: Discovery now streaming its fifth — and final — season.
And Paramount made the surprising and sad announcement that Star Trek: Lower Decks will join it in the new “Five-and-done” club later this year.
The news that what began as an improbable comedic love letter to everything Star Trek soon will end has stirred up emotions among the animated series’s creative team and fans alike.
Lower Decks creator and showrunner Mike McMahan as well as franchise executive Alex Kurtzman offered their thoughts in a joint statement shared on social media.
“We wanted to let you know that this fall will be the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true,” their statement said. “Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world they’ve built and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek. We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we’re working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off.
“Finally, thank you for always being so creative and joyful, for filling convention halls and chanting ‘Lower Decks!’ We remain hopeful that even beyond Season Five, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures,” it added.
Series co-star Jack Quaid offered his personal thoughts, as well.
“Hello Lower Deckers. I’m so sad to announce that Paramount Plus won’t be moving forward with more seasons of Lower Decks. I can't begin to tell you what an honor it’s been to be a part of this show and the Star Trek universe at large,” he posted. “I want to thank each and every person who put so much of their hard work and talent into every episode. You are AMAZING. The good news is that everyone who makes Lower Decks LOVES making Lower Decks. I could play Boimler for 17 more seasons. No joke. I’m serious. I love that purple-haired nerd. Hopefully we find a new home, but until then please look forward to an amazing season five.”

Fans also responded to the cancellation with a range of emotions and some clearly shared the same idea as Quaid.
A fan named Michael shared Quaid’s post with the comment, “Hey @netflix!
Would you like some Star Trek Lower Decks to along with your Star Trek Prodigy?
You know what you need to do! #SaveStarTrekLowerDecks”
The comment was in reference to the decision last year by Netflix to pick up the other current animated series in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Prodigy.
Thomas Marrone, art director for Star Trek Online and the artist who modeled the USS Enterprise-F for the third season of Star Trek: Picard, offered his own testimonial to the soon-to-be-departed Lower Decks.
“Star Trek Lower Decks carved a beautiful piece of the franchise into a monument to humor, friendship, love, and exploration. It will live on in our hearts as one of the best examples of Star Trek,” he said.
