Fans And More Remember Actor Gary Graham (1950-2024)
Performer was best known in Star Trek as Vulcan Soval from "Enterprise"
Fans and others associated with Star Trek are fondly remembering actor Gary Graham, who played several characters in the franchise — but was probably best known as the Vulcan ambassador, Soval, in Star Trek: Enterprise.
Graham, also known for his work in the sci-fi series Alien Nation, died Monday at age 73. He died as the result of cardiac arrest at a hospital in Spokane, Wash.
His ex-wife, Susan Lavelle, shared the news in a post on Facebook.
“It is with deep profound sadness to say that Gary Graham, my ex-husband, amazing actor and father of our beautiful only child together, Haylee Graham, has passed away today,” Lavelle said.
Graham made multiple appearances in Star Trek productions, including roles in fan-made productions.
He first appeared as Tanis in the second-season episode of Star Trek: Voyager, “Cold Fire.”
And much later he would get involved in fan productions like Star Trek: Of Gods and Men and Prelude To Axanar.
But Graham was most prominent in the franchise for his portrayal of Soval in 12 episodes of Enterprise.
He was also an accomplished musician, and even had helped form a Star Trek-themed band, Sons of Kirk.
After the passing of original series co-star Nichelle Nichols, fans noted that at her final public appearance at the age of 89 she was up and dancing to the music of Graham’s band.
Remembrances of Graham poured in Tuesday on social media.
Sean Ferrick, host of the YouTube channel TrekCulture, posted his condolences.
“Sad news this morning - Gary Graham, Soval from Enterprise - has passed away,” he wrote. “A distinct voice, he played cool, but endearing - even if it took a few episodes to really warm to his green blooded stoicism. RIP Gary - LLAP wherever you are now”
Actor Chris Doohan, son of original series co-star James Doohan, remembered the time he spent with Graham.
“So sad to hear of the passing of Gary Graham. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with him in London, and I also sang with his band a few times. My condolences go out to his family,” Doohan posted, with online video of he and Graham.
But it was a fan known on social media as Carl who offered what might have been the highest compliment.
“Gary Graham perfectly portrayed Soval in the Nimoy way of clearly having his emotions just under the surface at all times. One of my favorite performances in Enterprise. RIP” he wrote.
