Tributes Pour In After Actor Kenneth Mitchell Passes Away
Portrayed roles in "Discovery" and "Lower Decks"
Tributes and condolences began rolling in on social media for actor Kenneth Mitchell, who passed away Saturday after a struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was 49.
Mitchell was known in Star Trek for roles in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Mitchell remained public during his struggle with the rare and terminal neurodegenerative disease that results in the progressive loss of motor neurons that control voluntary muscles.
Discovery’s producers created a character called “Aurellio,” a scientist similarly paralyzed by illness, for the Season 3 episode “There Is a Tide.…”
Mitchell was repeatedly feted for his spirit during his lifetime, including the establishment of the Kenneth Michell Hope Award in 2022:
Those tributes continued after his passing, from across the Star Trek family.
“I am so saddened to read this. Kenneth and I were Twitter/X friends. We met a few times at conventions and spent some time exchanging DMs here,” original series star William Shatner posted. “He had such a positive outlook on life despite everything going on. He will be missed. Condolences to his family. 😔”

Lambda Quadrant, a philanthropic organization supporting the LGBTQ community, also posted a remembrance.
“We are deeply saddened, as many are, at the loss of a beloved Trek Actor. He truly embodied Hope For Humanity and we will honor his legacy by continuing to spread that hope and joy!” they said.
A number of the online memorials noted that a fund has been established for Mitchell’s surviving family, wife Susan and children Lilah and Kallum.
